📜 High in the La Garita Wilderness, a landscape formed by one of Earth's most massive volcanic explosions. 🔍 Features ghostly spires, needles, and flowing folds of earth, often called 'The City of Gnomes'.# Why Go📸 Stunning during sunrise and sunset🦌 Opportunities for viewing wildlife, birding, and rock hounding🚶‍♀️ Experience a challenging hike or 4WD adventure in a remote area, exploring unique spires, pinnacles, and columns.# Why Avoid⚠️ Extremely difficult access, requiring high clearance 4WD or a long, strenuous hike (8+ miles), involving stream crossings, steep pitches, and cliffs.⚠️ The road is very rough, rutted, and rocky; can be impassable during wet periods, especially monsoonal storms.⏳ An all-day trip (10+ hours), often recommended as an overnight stay.🐻 Bear aware camping required if staying overnight.⚠️ No camping or campfires allowed inside the formation area itself.# Tips🎒 Bring essential gear: water, food, shelter, sleeping bag, first aid, map, and proper footwear, especially for an overnight trip.📞 Check road status and weather with the Forest Service before your trip.🚶 Stay on the trail to prevent erosion.# Cost💰 Parking permit required (USFS Permits & Passes).# Hours🕒 Accessible May through October, road closures possible during wet periods.# 🅿️ ParkingCar travel ends at Hanson's Mill, then a 14-mile 4WD road.
