History Highlights

The fort was the setting for the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670, where Maratha commander Tanaji Malusare famously scaled the walls using a monitor lizard. It was renamed 'Sinhagad', meaning 'Lion's Fort', in his honor. Later, it served as a summer home for Bal Gangadhar Tilak and hosted a historic meeting with Mahatma Gandhi.

Features

The fort houses two entry gates (Pune darwaja and Kalyan darwaja), memorials for Tanaji Malusare and Rajaram I, a military stable, a brewery, and a temple of goddess Kali with a Hanuman statue.
