šŸ” Constructed as a powerful act of peace and resilience.

Rambadagalla is a small rural village surrounded by gentle rolling hills. The temple, Rambadagalla Viharaya, was founded in the 14th century CE, building on a rich Buddhist heritage with caves used by monks since the 2nd and 3rd centuries BCE. In 2001, Ven. Egodamulle Amaramoli Thero initiated the construction of a huge Buddha statue after being saddened by the Bamiyan destruction. Designed by Indian sculptor Muthiah Sthapathi, the 67-foot (20.6-meter) statue of the Buddha in Dhyana Mudra pose was carved into a granite monolith over twelve years, starting in 2003.
