🏛️ History & Architecture

Designed by architect Karel Hubáček and static engineer Zdeněk Patrmana, the tower was completed in 1973 and received the prestigious Perret Prize.
Standing 94 meters tall with a 17-meter transmitter antenna, its unique hyperboloid design was chosen to withstand local weather and visually complete the mountain's slopes.
Interiors are undergoing gradual reconstruction to restore their original 1970s appearance, featuring works by Otakar Binar, Karel Wünsch, Stanislav Libenský, Jaroslava Brychtová, and Vladimír Křečan.
The history of Ještěd as a tourist destination dates back to the mid-19th century, with the first refreshments sold in 1844 and the first hut built in 1850.
Rohanova chata was built in 1868, and a lookout tower in 1876 (replaced in 1889). A new mountain hotel opened in 1907, but both the hotel and Rohanova chata were destroyed by fire in 1963.
The tradition of crosses on Ještěd dates back to 1737; the first stone cross lasted until 1812, followed by wooden crosses from 1834. The current cross was erected in 1990 after its predecessor was secretly removed.
