⛪️ The Domažlice Tower is a distinctive cylindrical bell tower dominating the main square of Domažlice.
🧐 Famous for its 59 cm tilt, it rises 56 meters above the town, offering panoramic views from its 194 steps.
📜 Originally built in the 13th century (1262-1266), this unique tower served as a standalone city watchtower (hláska) for defense and announcing danger, and later as a fire watch station until the mid-20th century.
Its lean is attributed to unstable ground during construction, with workers' attempts to correct it inadvertently causing further tilt. Recent surveys confirm the tower is no longer tilting.
🎶 The tower houses four historic bells, each with its own story.
🔔 The largest, Zikmund (1824, 1760 kg), rings before Sunday services.
🔔 Pavel, Marie, or Poledník (c. 1650, 345 kg), rings daily at 18:00.
🔔 Umíráček (1729, 61 kg) is rung minimally due to wear.
🔔 The smallest and oldest, Advent (c. 1500, 12 kg), is uniquely installed and rung only during the Advent period (daily at 18:00 until December 24th).
The current bells were installed after major fires in 1747 and 1822 destroyed previous ones.
