History

👑 Founded by King Charles IV in 1357, replacing the earlier Judith Bridge destroyed by a flood in 1342.
🏗️ Construction was overseen by Petr Parléř, completed in 1402.
📏 The bridge is 515.76 m long, 9.5 m wide, and rests on 16 arches.
💡 First illuminated by oil lanterns in 1723.
🚌 Historically, it hosted horse-drawn trams (1883), electric trams (1905), and buses (1908-WWII), with car traffic ending in 1965.

Statues

🗿 Adorned with 30 statues and sculptural groups, mostly installed between 1706 and 1714.
😇 The oldest preserved statue is St. John of Nepomuk (1683), with the last group, Saints Cyril and Methodius, added in 1928.
🎨 Many original statues, damaged by floods or weather, have been replaced by copies, with originals preserved in museums.
🌟 Notable sculptors include Matyáš Bernard Braun and Ferdinand Maxmilián Brokoff.
