Originally an 11th-century wooden fort, the castle was rebuilt in stone in the mid-14th century. It served as a vital military outpost on the border of the Kingdom of Poland and was part of the famous Eagle Nests Trail. The castle hosted Polish kings like Henryk Walezy and Jan III Sobieski, as well as Bohemian King Charles IV. Despite suffering damage from fires and wars, including the Swedish invasion, it underwent significant reconstructions in the 19th and 20th centuries, including a neo-Gothic phase by Edward Raczyński.
The museum spans four floors, showcasing medieval and post-medieval weaponry, alongside regional and castle history. The castle is situated on a hill by the Czarna Przemsza River, offering a picturesque setting. The visit typically takes 2-3 hours.
The adjacent Castle Hill features a recreational park with a playground, making it suitable for children.
Access to the underground tunnels is possible only by phone appointment. Due to the castle's historical structure and location on a hill, full wheelchair accessibility may be limited.
Entry fee is 3 PLN.
